Murraylands
Whether it's house-boating, exploring historic towns, bushwalking or just relaxing, South Australia's Murraylands region has it all. Just one hour's drive from Adelaide, the Murraylands is home to the mighty Murray River which carves its way through the centre of the region. The lush river environment contrasts with the haunting landscapes of the Mallee, creating a holiday destination that's diverse, fascinating and fun.
No visit to the Murraylands is complete without a cruise on the Murray River. From two-hour morning tea jaunts to a week-long expedition along the length of the river in South Australia, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Cruising the Murray is also a great way to gain an insight into the history of the world's fourth largest river system. In the 19th century the Murray River played a vital role as a communication and transport link, and hundreds of barges and paddle steamers plied their trade. Those with limited time should head for Mannum or Murray Bridge, where you can take a short morning tea cruise.
If you're on a houseboat, visit one of the region's many butchers and cook up a hearty barbecue. Or take the night off and motor right up to a riverside pub - popular restaurants at Mannum, Murray Bridge and Swan Reach have houseboat mooring spots right out the front!
Country bakeries, relaxed pubs and some of the best picnic spots in South Australia can all be found in the Murraylands. Whether you're looking for a romantic three-course dinner or a casual family meal, the region has something to tempt the most fickle of tastebuds.
Choose from one of many trails to explore the vast landscape in Ngarkat Conservation Park. You'll discover natural and historic sites including the Pine Hut Soak, a natural clearing among eucalypt bush-land and native pine which, at the turn of the nineteenth century, was used as a saw pit for native pine logging.
The Murraylands offers some of the best bird-watching experiences in South Australia. The Mallee plains that extend for as far as the eye can see are a haven for bird life. At Ngarkat and Karte conservation parks, you can see everything from ring-necked parrots, honeyeaters and white-winged choughs, to Australian bustards, yellow-tailed black cockatoos and sometimes even a rare Mallee emu-wren or the Mallee ningaui.
It's time to recharge on the Murray River, time to stretch out on sunny verandahs, walk along the willow fringed banks, cruise wide waters, and linger over lazy barbecues.
